Red Cross Building. Cartagena, Spain
Our proposal includes an efficient drop-off and vehicular parking zone utilising only half of the ground floor area whilst maximising storage space and providing a welcoming car-free staff and guest entrance at the heart of the building. A void is created at first floor directly above the entrance lobby to bring in much needed natural light through restored and enhanced skylights.
Inully were invited to reconfigure and refurbish the existing industrial warehouse space occupied by Red Cross in Cartagena, Spain. Positioned at the foot of the majestic hillside Parque Torres along Calle Gilbert, the existing ground level caters predominantly for vehicular movement, drop-off, pick up and parking with some back of house storage. Guests and staff need to navigate this vehicular movement to reach the staircase at the rear, bringing up the the first floor reception, staff and guests facilities.
The triple height volumes and natural light promote tall and hanging planting features, which brings a calm green palette in contrast to the industrial red brick and steel aesthetic.
Comfortable furnishings create a warm welcome for guests before being directed up to public accommodation at first floor. The previously enclosed office spaces and meetings rooms with a long connecting corridor is transformed into a mostly open plan environment. Transparency is provided for most staff to enjoy the expansive warehouse space, with acoustic screens provided for guests where privacy is required. Enclosed flexible meeting rooms are strategically positioned into corners or zones to naturally define departments whilst maintaining the open concept.
