Founders' Memorial. Singapore
The design of the Founders' Memorial, "V", representing the five ideals, the five founding values, and the five halls, intentionally presents itself in a subtle, elegant, and effective manner. At its core, are five halls that underpin the five founding ideals of Singapore: Democracy, Peace, Progress, Justice, and Equality.
Unlike most memorials that tend to be obtrusive and opulent, and dominate the site monumentally, the design of the Founders' Memorial, "V", representing the five ideals, the five founding values, and the five halls, intentionally presents itself in a subtle, elegant and effective manner. Taking cognizance of the Bay East masterplan, the memorial building gently nestles within the landscape, exuding a dignified, timeless, and tranquil presence. At its core, are five halls that underpin the five founding ideals of Singapore: Democracy, Peace, Progress, Justice, and Equality.
Connecting and leading to these five pavilions, a sunken memorial plaza draws visitors from various transport and approach nodes. A reflecting pool with five light totems, embodying the five core founding values, anchors the spaces and creates a sense of arrival for the development. Low carbon embodied energy materials including rammed earth construction provide warm, tactile and honest tones to invoke the senses and experiential levels both internally and externally.
Strong visual cues formed by the crest of the landscape suspended over the five values, is a resonant message that no single value is dominant over the other. All five values are regarded as equal under one shell, bound together to make Singapore uniquely what it is today.
